How to use the sod calculator

How much sod do I need?

The amount of sod you need depends on the total area of your lawn. For a simple rectangular lawn, multiply the length by the width to find the square footage.

How much extra sod should I order?

A waste allowance helps account for pieces that need to be cut or cannot be used efficiently. The right amount depends on the shape of your lawn. A simple rectangular lawn may require less extra material than a lawn with curves, corners, planting beds, or other irregular sections.

How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?

Because of this, the calculator does not assume that every pallet covers one fixed amount. Enter the coverage listed by your sod supplier.

How many square feet are in a sod pallet?

How to calculate sod coverage for your lawn size

To calculate sod coverage, first determine the area of the lawn. For a rectangular area, multiply length by width. If your lawn contains multiple sections, calculate each section separately and add the areas together.

For example, imagine a lawn has two rectangular sections:

• Section 1: 40 ft × 20 ft = 800 sq ft
• Section 2: 25 ft × 15 ft = 375 sq ft
• Total lawn area: 1,175 sq ft

Measuring an irregular lawn for sod

For curved or highly irregular lawns, measurements are only an estimate. Adding an appropriate amount of extra sod can help account for cutting and fitting.

Does sod size affect how much sod I need?

Your total sod requirement is based on the area you need to cover, not simply the number of individual pieces. Different suppliers may sell sod in different roll or slab sizes, so the number of pieces can vary even when the lawn area stays the same.
